Treatment of osteoarthritis with Arthrosamid injection

What is Arthrosamid®?

Arthrosamid® is an injectable implant and consists of 2.5% polyacrylamide hydrogel and 97.5% water. It has an open structure that allows the ingrowth of cells.

  • Non-degradable, for long-lasting effect
  • Biocompatible, integrates with the synovial tissue and is permeable to salts and organic molecules
  • Viscoelastic, flexible and resistant to shear forces

How does Arthrosamid® work?

The action of Arthrosamid® takes place in the joint capsule of the knee. Arthrosamid® is injected into the joint cavity after which it slowly fuses with the inside of the joint capsule (synovial tissue), making it more elastic and thicker. It forms a natural barrier to the inflammatory response reducing it, the capsule becomes more elastic so that the nerve endings responsible for pain are less likely to be activated, and the joint capsule begins to produce better quality synovial fluid contributing to a healthier knee. This process of growing into the synovial tissue takes approximately between 6 weeks and 4 months. During this time, you will slowly notice a slight decrease in symptoms. Some patients tell you after 3 months they are disappointed, but after 4 months the same patients call to say they can play sports again. Different individual patients react very differently when treated with Arthrosamid.

Research has shown that in younger patients, under the age of 60 the success rate of treatment is as high as 95% while in older patients, over the age of 70 it is about 67%. When compared to other injection treatments, this success rate is high. In addition, the vast majority of these patients still benefit from the treatment after 5 years. This is in contrast to other injection treatments that only last up to 1 year.

1. Injection into the knee

After Arthrosamid is injected into the knee, Arthrosamid coats the surface of the synovia, with which it later fuses. The image clearly shows that the Arthrosamid is pressed againstthe synovia affected by synovitis .

2. Arhtrosamid fused

The synovia renewed approximately every 6 weeks. These new cells grow in the Arthrosamid and form an intermediate layer. This intermediate layer forms a natural barrier to the inflammatory response. This reduces inflammation, pain and swelling.

3. Results

Knee is healthier, The synovia has become somewhat more elastic, the inflammation has decreased markedly and the quality of synovial fluid made by the capsule is of a better quality than before the treatment
