The action of Arthrosamid® takes place in the joint capsule of the knee. Arthrosamid® is injected into the joint cavity after which it slowly fuses with the inside of the joint capsule (synovial tissue), making it more elastic and thicker. It forms a natural barrier to the inflammatory response reducing it, the capsule becomes more elastic so that the nerve endings responsible for pain are less likely to be activated, and the joint capsule begins to produce better quality synovial fluid contributing to a healthier knee. This process of growing into the synovial tissue takes approximately between 6 weeks and 4 months. During this time, you will slowly notice a slight decrease in symptoms. Some patients tell you after 3 months they are disappointed, but after 4 months the same patients call to say they can play sports again. Different individual patients react very differently when treated with Arthrosamid.
Research has shown that in younger patients, under the age of 60 the success rate of treatment is as high as 95% while in older patients, over the age of 70 it is about 67%. When compared to other injection treatments, this success rate is high. In addition, the vast majority of these patients still benefit from the treatment after 5 years. This is in contrast to other injection treatments that only last up to 1 year.

After Arthrosamid is injected into the knee, into the so-called synovial space, it spreads across the knee and is pressed against the joint capsule. The picture clearly shows the Arthrosamid pressing against the inflamed joint capsule.
The inner lining of the joint capsule renews itself constantly, approximately every six weeks. These new cells grow in the Arthrosamid and form a natural barrier. This barrier reduces inflammation, pain and swelling.

Arthrosamid® differs from viscosupplementation injections such as hyaluronic acid (HA), platelet-rich plasma (PRP/ ACP/ Nstride or WINT) and regenerative stem cell therapy. Unlike these treatments, Arthrosamid® permanently becomes an integrated part of the soft synovial tissue in the joint capsule and physically alters this capsule. Arthrosamid is not absorbed or broken down like the other injections, which means it remains effective for much longer, up to 5 years after a single treatment.
Before you receive an injection of Arthrosamid®, you will also be given a local anaesthetic, which may sting a little, to numb the area around your knee. No serious side effects related to Arthrosamid® have been reported in studies. The most commonly reported side effects were injection-related mild to moderate pain and/or joint swelling, which were generally transient.
