Treatment osteoarthritis

How and where can you get treatment with Arhtrosamid®?

For treatment with Arthrosamid® you can go to different clinics or doctors. check our website regularly as more and more treatment locations are being added. Arthrosamid® is not reimbursed by your mutual insurance company (health insurance company) because it is outside of regular care. Do you have any questions about this? This means you have to pay the bill for the treatment yourself. Please feel free to contact the clinic you are going to for treatment for more information.

Do you have osteoarthritis and are considering treatment with Arthrosamid®? Then you are welcome to visit one of the clinics below.

Preparation

Depending on your medical condition, it may be necessary to take antibiotics beforehand. The skin around the injection site is carefully cleaned to prevent infection.

Anesthesia

To minimize the pain of the injection, you will be given an anesthetic with lidocaine, which numbs both the skin and the knee.

Injection process (1)

If there is too much fluid in your knee, it will first be removed with an injection needle.

Injection process (2)

The needle remains in your knee while the syringe is disconnected.

Injection process (3)

Arthrosamid is injected into the knee through six separate 1 ml syringes. Sometimes the drug is injected into two different sites, depending on your doctor's judgment.

After treatment

Once the injection is complete, a patch is applied to the injection site.

What to expect.

If you and your doctor decide that treatment with Arthrosamid® is appropriate, you will be given a tablet of antibiotics beforehand. This serves to eliminate the – admittedly very small – risk of infection (1 in 10,000).

Next, your knee is carefully disinfected, such as with alcohol, and you are given a local anesthetic. This anesthetic can be ultrasound-guided to make even more sure that it enters the knee joint correctly, and not the soft tissue around the knee. Once properly positioned, the anesthetic needle remains in situ and a new syringe containing 1 ml of Arthrosamid® is connected. That syringe is changed six times, so you will receive a total of 6 ml of Arthrosamid® through a single needle.

After the injection, a plaster is applied and you may stand up and go home. It is recommended to quietly move your knee shortly after the treatment – a short walk or briefly on the exercise bike is perfect – so that the Arthrosamid® can mix well with the joint fluid.

What can you expect after Arthrosamid® treatment?

Every patient responds differently to treatment with Arthrosamid®. Some notice improvement quickly, while in others it can take up to four months before a positive effect is felt. It is therefore difficult to predict in advance exactly how you will react.

To better understand this, we participate in research. Therefore, you may receive a digital questionnaire before treatment: the so-called WOMAC score, which we use to assess pain, mobility and daily functioning. We ask you to fill it in as accurately as possible.

You will also receive this questionnaire again after treatment, at set intervals: after 6 weeks, after 3 months, after six months, after 1 year and annually thereafter.

All your data will be kept strictly confidential, in accordance with European privacy laws.

The first days after treatment

Many patients notice immediately or within a few days reduced pain symptoms. This is due to Arthrosamid’s lubricating and shock-absorbing properties. Some actually experience temporary  worsening of symptoms, but this usually disappears within a few days to a week. This is a reaction of the body to the injection. After a week, the familiar symptoms may return and then slowly disappear over a period of 6 weeks to four months.

Long-term effect

Over the course of several months, your pain will gradually decrease. Maximum results are often achieved after 3 to 4 months, and scientific research shows that the effect can last up to 5 years.

Load and recovery

When you have a clear positive effect of the treatment, sometimes you may still overload the knee and experience pain and or swelling. This does not matter and is normal. These symptoms usually disappear after one or two days. If necessary you may  Use paracetamol (up to 6 per day) and taper off after a few days.

Everyone responds differently to treatment. Research shows that 80% of patients respond positively to Arthrosamid. Research has shown that there is a difference in treatment effect between younger and older patients. Younger patients, under the age of 60 respond positively 95% of the time while older patients, over the age of 70 respond positively 67% of the time. If you have any questions about treatment, or any concerns always discuss them with your doctor!

Attention! : If you have a severe reaction with swelling, redness and/or fever immediately after the treatment and in the following days, it is important to contact your doctor immediately.
